The pictorial carpets of Tabriz...
The craftmanship of the weaver and designer...
displayed in some of the modern carpets of Tabriz, Iran is evident
in the photograph of the pictorial carpet on the right, it depicts a detail
of the back of the carpet. The use of the various colour shades of wool
in the fur of the Tiger and the surrounding bush is of such exactitude
that the carpet evokes the work of famous Canadian wildlife painter
Robert Bateman. |

Out of the Mist...
Once known as the Nootka, the Nuu-cha-nulth live along the west coast
of Vancouver Island, Canada, and the U.S. Olympic Peninsula. This vibrant
contemporary culture has roots that go back centuries. Its artistry, ceremony
and spiritual life express reverence for the sea, land and creatures. This
exhibit at Victoria's Royal
British Columbia Museum collapses time by bringing together objects
from the 18th. Century to the present. These invoke the presence of the
Nuu-chah-nulth ancestors and reveal concepts at the heart of the culture. The
exhibit ran through April 2000. |

Profile...Robert de Rot
The last 35 years Robert de Rot has travelled and worked throughout
the world in pursuit of his passion - carpets. Carpets have been an important
part of his life since childhood. In fact you might say the business is
in his blood. As a young man in Amsterdam, he spent many hours in his family's
gallery learning the touch, feel and characteristics of carpets from the
various regions in the east, link to profile |
Pictorial carpet, an Oriental masterpiece
As well as the Tiger carpet mentioned earlier on this page, this
carpet hails from the environs of the City of Tabriz, Iran. This carpet
shows the same mastery in weaving, design and use of colour shades.
Both carpets, amongst others recently appraised by the writer, belong to
a Canadian collection. An article and more photographs will be published
with our next update. |
